When Batley Grammar School was founded in 1612, its founder's aim was 'to make such as be capable fit for the University.' The School maintains this tradition of providing a sound academic education, as is reflected by its good track-record of success at both GCSE and Advanced level. This year 99% of pupils scored at least 5 GCSE passes (Grade A-C), while at A level 40% of grades were A or B. 92% of students moved on to University.
Modern teaching techniques of proven value are used both throughout and across the curriculum and the school is very well provided for in this area, in its highly trained staff and in its equipment. The school is big enough to provide good facilities, but not so large that the boys and girls feel unnoticed or feel anonymous.
While the curriculum is naturally at the centre of the life of the school, a dedicated staff consider it their role to help all BGS pupils develop into well-rounded adults capable of meeting the increasing challenges of the world beyond out school. Opportunities abound for each individual to pursue their interests, whether sporting, musical or intellectual.
The school takes the health of its pupils very seriously, and sporting activities provide exercise and enjoyment for boys and girls throughout the school, as well as plenty of opportunities to represent the school in sporting fixtures. The Combined Cadet Force and Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme provide the framework for a challenging programme of leadership training and Outdoor Pursuits.
Free instrumental tuition and a wide variety of music groups ensure that Batley Grammar School maintains its high reputation for musical performance. The School's Brass Band is considered one of the finest in the country.
Batley Grammar School provides the opportunity to excel, both academically and in a wide range of extra-curricular activities. The school participates fully in the Assisted Places Scheme, which provides financial assistance with fees.
